My Early Retirement Dream: Choosing Between Portugal, Spain, and France, but How?

Imagine leaving work behind and moving to a beautiful place where life is slower, the weather is perfect, and you can enjoy every day to the fullest. I’ve been looking at three amazing countries for this dream: Portugal, Spain, and more recently France.

Let me tell you why these places are on my mind and what makes each one special.

Charming Lisbon

Lisbon is a capital city with a mix of old-world charm and modern living. It has beautiful coastal views, great weather, and friendly people.

The neighborhoods are charming, with colorful buildings and cobblestone streets. It’s also cheaper to live here than in many other capital cities. Although rent prices have increased, they are nowhere near as high as Toronto. I could get a nice apartment without going off budget.

All Portuguese people that I have met on my travels have been warm and welcoming.

Portugal has excellent healthcare, and as a retiree, there is access to both public and private hospitals.

Portugal is also one of the most iinclusive and welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ people, making it a great choice for living, traveling, or retiring.

Las Setas De Sevilla

Flamenco and Tapas in Sevilla

If you know me, you know that Seville has stolen my heart.

This southern city is perfect for early retirement. It’s known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture.

The weather is fantastic, if you don’t count the days the temperatures go above 40 Celsius and the cost of living is reasonable, so I wouldn’t have to worry too much about money.

One of the things I really love about Seville is that it is full of history, with amazing buildings like the Seville Cathedral and the Alcázar palace. It also has incredible cultural events like Semana Santa and the Ferria de Abril.

And honestly, the food is diverse and delicious. Plus, the Mediterranean diet is super healthy. I’ll be running to stay healthy, not to lose weight.

Like Portugal, Spain has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, so I’d be in good hands if I ever needed medical care.

As well, Spain is known for being progressive on LGBTQ+ rights and is considered one of the most gay-friendly countries in the world.

France: Elegance and Beauty

You can’t think about moving to the Mediterranean without considering France.

Montpellier is a stunning city in southern France offers a perfect blend of old and new. It’s close to the Mediterranean coast, has beautiful weather, and boasts a lively arts and culture scene.

The city is known for its vibrant cultural life, with many museums, galleries, and historic sites. Plus it’s only three hours by train to Barcelona or Paris!

Will definitely need to keep up the running with French food being one of my favourites. Fresh pastries, cheese, wine, and gourmet meals every day.

France also has an excellent healthcare system, which means I’d be well taken care of.

France is considered one of the most progressive countries in Europe regarding LGBTQ+ rights.

While the cost of living in France is higher than in Portugal or Spain, it really is worth the price!

So Why Move to the Mediterranean?

The Mediterranean diet is super healthy. The diet is full of fresh vegetables, fruits, olive oil, and seafood. The warm weather means I can spend lots of time outdoors, staying active and enjoying nature.

It’s generally cheaper to live in Portugal, Spain, or France than in Canada. Housing, food, and entertainment are more affordable, so I can live comfortably without spending too much.

These countries are known for their strong sense of community. Whether in a busy city or a quiet village, I’d find friendly people and lots of social activities.

Living in the Mediterranean means I can easily travel to other beautiful parts of Europe. Weekend trips to Italy, Greece, or even Ireland are totally possible.

So What Do You Think?

Early retirement in the Mediterranean sounds like a dream come true, right? Whether I choose Portugal, Spain, or France, I’m in for an amazing adventure. I can’t wait to start planning those sunny, relaxing days by the sea!
