Moving to another country is scary and exciting all rolled into one!
There are many things Canadians need to consider and put into place before jumping on that plane. Doing extensive research is crucial. Start by understanding the country’s culture, laws, and language.
You’ll also need to familiarize yourself with local customs and living conditions to reduce culture shock and ensure a smoother transition.
I have made many scouting trips over the last couple of years and highly recommend that you do that before deciding on a location.
1. Getting a Visa
Ensure your legal documents, such as visas are in order.
Obtaining a visa can be tricky, so be sure to make sure that you meet all the requirements. Consulates in different cities have different requirements, so be sure that you are working with the one that covers where you live.
There are also lots of expat FaceBook groups that share their experience and companies that can help.

Financial planning is equally important.
There are certain steps that you will need to take before leaving Canada and likely tax filing options going forward. It will be a good idea to get advice from a professional.
Understand the cost of living, banking systems, and especially tax obligations to avoid cosltly surprises. The good news is that Canada has tax treaties with many countries and you can get advice on how to set up your
You will also need to understand currency conversions and how to get the best rate. I’ll share a post about that very soon.
3. Health Insurance and Medical Care
Understand the healthcare system of your destination country and locate nearby medical facilities in advance.

Make sure that you have the right health insurance once you are in the country to make sure that you have no surprises if you need care.
4. Safety Precautions
Do your research about safety in your country of destination.
Portugal is ranked the seventh safesty country in the world and Spain is 23rd out of over 190 according to the 2024 Global Peace Index. I have always felt safe in both countries — even at night.
The Government of Canada also travel information and advice to help you to make informed decisions and travel safely while you are outside Canada.
You should also register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service to receive updates on local safety conditions and allow the government to assist you in emergencies.
5. Adapting to a New Culture
Adjusting to a new culture can be challenging.
Be open-minded and respectful of local customs and practices. To avoid culture shock, learning the language, even basic phrases, can significantly enhance your experience and help you integrate more easily.
Building a social network is essential for a successful transition. Connect with local communities, other expatriates, or join social groups and clubs.
These connections can provide support and make your experience abroad more enjoyable.
Conclusion
Living abroad as a Canadian is a rewarding experience that offers personal growth and a broader worldview. With thorough planning and the right resources, you can navigate this exciting journey with confidence.
