It seems like every time I turn on the TV or open my phone, there’s another crisis or tragedy unfolding. Whether it’s the wild fires in Los Angeles, Donald Trump threatening 25% tariffs on Canada and to seize Greenland and the Panama Canal or the political drama unfolding in Ottawa it’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of doom and gloom.
As someone who was in public affairs and issues management for many years it was important that I stay informed about what’s going on. As I have learned the hard way, it’s also important to take a break from the news every now and then.
There are several reasons why taking a break from the news is important. First, it can help to improve your mental health. Studies have shown that exposure to negative news can lead to anxiety, stress, and even depression. Taking a break from the news can give you a chance to relax and de-stress.
Second, taking a break from the news can help you to be more productive. When you’re constantly bombarded with information, it can be difficult to focus on anything else. Taking a break from the news can help you to clear your head and focus on the tasks at hand.
Third, taking a break from the news can help you to be more creative. When you’re not constantly being bombarded with information, your mind has a chance to wander and come up with new ideas. Taking a break from the news can help you to tap into your creativity.
So, how can you take a break from the news? Here are a few tips:
- Set limits for yourself. Decide how much time you’re going to spend watching or reading the news each day. Once you’ve reached your limit, turn off the TV, stop doom scrolling or close your computer.
- Find other activities to enjoy. Instead of watching the news, spend time with friends and family, go for a walk, or read a book.
- Take a complete break from the news. Go on vacation or spend a weekend somewhere you won’t have access to the news.
Taking a break from the news is important for your mental health, productivity, and creativity. So, make sure to schedule some time for yourself to unplug and relax.
In addition to the tips above, here are a few other things you can do to take a break from the news:
- Unfollow news sources on social media.
- Turn off news alerts on your phone.
- Avoid conversations about the news.
- Meditate or do yoga.
- Spend time in nature.
