People Pleasing At Work Can Lead To Burn Out

Ever feel like you’re constantly trying to make everyone happy at work? Like you’re saying “yes” to everything, even when you’re already swamped? That was me, being a people-pleaser.

It’s super common, especially at work where we want to get along with our colleagues and impress our bosses. But constantly putting others’ needs before your own can lead to stress and even burnout.

That’s where mindfulness comes in. Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment and aware of your thoughts and feelings without judging them. It can help you recognize when you’re falling into people-pleasing habits and give you the space to make different choices.

Why We People-Please

There are lots of reasons why we become people-pleasers. Sometimes it’s because we want to avoid conflict or we crave approval from others. Other times, it might be because we don’t want to let anyone down or we feel responsible for everyone else’s emotions. Whatever the reason, it’s important to realize that constantly trying to please everyone is not sustainable.

How Mindfulness Can Help

Mindfulness can help you in a few ways:

  • Self-awareness: By practicing mindfulness, you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings. This can help you recognize when you’re about to say “yes” to something you don’t really want to do.
  • Non-reactivity: Mindfulness teaches you to observe your thoughts and feelings without immediately reacting to them. This can give you a pause before you automatically agree to something, allowing you to make a more conscious choice.
  • Self-compassion: Mindfulness encourages self-compassion, which means being kind to yourself. This can help you let go of the need to be perfect and please everyone, and instead, prioritize your own well-being.

Tips to Stop People-Pleasing

Here are some tips to help you break the cycle of people-pleasing:

  • Buy yourself time: If someone asks you to do something, don’t feel pressured to give an immediate answer. Say you need some time to think about it.
  • Respectfully set boundaries: It’s important to set clear boundaries between your work and personal life. This will help you avoid taking on too much and becoming overwhelmed. Ask for help reprioritizing if necessary.
  • Practice self-care: Make sure you’re taking care of your own needs, both physically and mentally. This will give you the strength to say “no” when you need to.

  • Breath awareness: Focus on the sensation of your breath as it enters and leaves your body.

Remember, it’s okay to say “no.” You don’t have to please everyone all the time. By practicing mindfulness and setting boundaries, you can create a healthier and more balanced work life.
